Nyakahoja Primary School, Mwanza, Tanzania

Teachers needed (Graduates or Qualified Teachers).
We have arranged a placement in a lovely school by the shores of Lake Victoria. Nyakahoja School is a Catholic primary school run by the Sisters of St Mary of Tabora in the town of Mwanza, northern Tanzania. Lessons are taught in English and there are plenty of opportunites to teach and help in many curricular areas, especially drama and sports. On the school campus there is a boarding house for pupils who live far away and also the convent and the Volunteer's Accommodation. Next door are the Jesuit Residence and church.

The main role of the volunteer will be to teach in the school. However there are also opportunites to become involved in the parish: joining the choir, teaching English to parishioners and becoming involved in local projects.

Accommodation is in a tiny self-contained house for one person. There is one large bedroom/living room, a small very basic kitchen and a small basic bathroom. Most of the time you will be self-catering, however, you will also be invited for meals to the Convent and Jesuit Residence. There is a need for up to 2 volunteers.

Mwanza is situated on the southern shores of lake Victoria and is the second largest town in Tanzania. Mwanza has a small aiport and there are daily flights to and from other towns within Tanzania and Kenya.

Travel: You will fly to Dar es Salaam and stay for a couple of nights at the Jesuit Residence in Dar. Then you will catch a local plane or overland bus to Mwanza.

It is recommended that you learn Kiswhaili and do a “TEFL” course (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) before going out to Mwanza.

The start date for this placement is late December or early January, depending on the term dates. The period of service is for 6 to 12 months. Occasionally August may be agreed as a start date.
